Monuments to the seven Lincoln-Douglas debates

It’s been a busy week. With over 2900 miles covered, I’ve seen dozens of Abraham Lincoln statues throughout the state of Illinois. Here’s a sampling of the seven Lincoln-Douglas debate monuments. I’ll have more when I return.

  1. Seems like good thinking on Alton’s part to have the silos (which show, or used to, anyway, the flood level during the so-called “great flood” of 1993) emblazoned with Alton’s name. On the other debate statues/monuments/fountains/building markers, the city is not readily seen (at least not by my poor eyesight!). Fascinating. Thank you for sharing these, David. Safe travels!

    • Most of the debate sites are in parks away from the main streets. Alton was right in the middle of a busy area with the highway nearby, and the designers clearly knew the building would be in every photo of the site. Clever advertising.
